Shri Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla



About god: Shri Mahadev also known as Lord Shiva.

Land Mark:
Temple is about 65 kilometres from the capital city of Panaji

Brief history:
This temple
dedicated to  Lord Shiva was built in the 12th century. It is built using black basalt deep inside the dense forest and thus was able to survived Muslim invasions and Portuguese persecution.The symbol of the Kadamba kingdom, an elephant trampling a horse is carved on the base of one of the columns. The river Surla flows nearby.

Famous festival: The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated in grand way with huge gathering.

Shri Mahalasa Narayani Temple, Mardol, Ponda


About god:
Shri Mahalasa Narayani is the Mohini avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu


Land Mark:
Situated in Mardol, 5Kms. from Ponda and about 18Kms. from Margao. There are other temple of Shri Santeri, Shri Laxmi-Narayan, Grampursh, Bhagwati, Dadh, Simha Purush & Maha Purush,

Brief history: There is a belief that main temple of Goddess was originally located in Nepal. She was moved to Aurangabad in Maharashtra. During the Mughal rule the idol was moved to a secret location in Goa. And then small temple was built at Verna. Later when Portuguese conquered Goa the temple was again relocated in Mardol next to Shri Santeri Temple

          The temple is famous for its Brass Lamp tower & huge brass bell which does not have a ringer .The ringer was attached when somebody wanted to testify, with the believed that the goddess will punish the person who lied while ringing the bell. Testimony in the temple was considered acceptable in the court of law during Portuguese rule.

Important Day:
Palakhi on every Sunday.. The goddess is taken out for the ride around the temple in palenquin, decorated with colorful flower.
( Timing 5:00pm to 7:30pm )

Famous festival:
The Magha Jatra (festival) at the temple and Navaratri are the days of importance in the yearly calendar.

Shri Kamakshi Temple, Shiroda


About goddess: An Incarnation of Goddess ( Goddess Parvati, consort of Shiva )

Land Mark:
About 22 kms from margao, situated on the bank of the river Kushwati

Brief history:
The originally Sri Kamakshi temple was Raia in Salcete Taluka. But the deity was later shifted to Shiroda village in Ponda Taluka at the time of the destruction of the temple in Raia by the Captain of Rachol, Diogo Rodrigues,
by alien rulers between 1564 and 1568. As per one of the legend potter of the Raia village shifted the idol of the deity across the river safely and thus potter from Raia have the hereditary right to light the first lamp at the Kamakshi festival in Shiroda

Surrounding:
The other shrines in the temple complex are that of Shree Shantadurga, Shree Laxmi Narayana and Shree Rayeshwar
or Shiva and the place where the temple is built has an ancient name “Shivagram”. Also within the temple, there are shrines dedicated to Lord Hanuman (Maruti) and Dattatreya. Idol of Kalbhairava and Betal are also found on the left and right of the silver screen leading to the sanctuary which has the goddess on her pedestal.

Procession of goddess shiroda kamakshi on every amavasya (New Moon)

Shri Maha Ganapati Temple, Khandola

Land Mark:
Khandola-Marcel , about 20 km from Panajim

Brief history:
The original temple was located on the island of Divar (area adjoining the Chuch of Our Lady of Piedade).After it was destroyed by the Porduguese around year 1540 idle was moved to Khandepar in Ponda taluka, later Narve in Bicholim taluka and finally to Khandola around 1750.

Shri Damodar Temple, Zambaulim


About god: Shri Damodar, incarnation of  lord Shiva


Land Mark: Situated at Zambaulim on the bank of the river Kushwati, about 22 kms from margao,


Brief history: The deity was originally based in a temple where the Holy Spirit Church in Margao now stands and was moved to escape from the Portuguese inquisition in 1565 when the temple was destroyed and the church was built on its site.

Important Day: Every Monday procession (around 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM)



Famous festival: Shigmo the Goan Hindu festival of color is the main festival celebrated at the Damodar temple.
